Autrefois, il n’y avait pas de pont sur le Bonnant. Comme chacun peut se l’imaginer, Saint-Gervais était de ce fait-là coupé irrémédiablement en deux. Le curé, particulièrement, réfléchissait chaque jour aux inconvénients qui résulteraient de cet état de fait, si nuisible à ses ouailles de la rive gauche, qu’il ne pouvait atteindre. Un soir, un étranger se présenta à la porte du presbytère. Introduit devant le curé, il lui dit à brûle-pourpoint : ‘Je vous offre de bâtir en une seule nuit un pont sur le Bonnant’. Le curé, surpris, lâcha une exclamation bien peu orthodoxe :
– Diable ! s’écria-t-il.
– C’est moi-même, répondit le personnage en s’inclinant.
Le curé fit le signe de la croix et Satan grimaça singulièrement.
– Que voulez-vous pour cela ? demanda, le curé, peu rassuré.
– Je demande que l’on m’accorde la première créature vivante qui passera sur le pont.
Le marché fut conclu et signé sur un parchemin aux marques infernales, et le Diable se retira. Le lendemain, le pont était construit. Le curé arriva, portant quelque chose sous sa soutane. Une foule émerveillée le suivait. Il s’avança sur le pont et y lança, avec force, un superbe chat que le Diable happa avec des rugissements de colère, mêlés aux miaulements désespérés du matou expiatoire. Ainsi fut fait et le brave curé put enfin réunir tout son peuple de ce côté de l’eau.
In the past, there was no bridge over the Bonnant. As everyone can imagine, Saint-Gervais was thus cut irrevocably in two. The curate, in particular, reflected every day on the disadvantages which would result from this state of affairs, so injurious to his flocks on the left bank, which he could not attain. One evening a stranger came to the door of the presbytery. Introduced to the cure, he said to him, "I offer you to build a bridge over the Bonnant in one night." The priest, surprised, let go a very unorthodox exclamation:
-Devil ! Cried he.
-It is myself, replied the person, bowing.
The priest made the sign of the cross and Satan grimaced singularly.
-What do you want for that? Asked the cure, not much reassured.
-I ask that I be granted the first living creature that will pass on deck.
The market was concluded and signed on a parchment with infernal marks, and the Devil withdrew. The next day the bridge was built. The priest arrived, carrying something under his cassock. An astonished crowd followed him. He advanced on the deck and thrust into it a superb cat, which the Devil snatched with angry roars, mingled with the desperate meowing of the expiatory tomcat. So was done, and the brave cure could at last unite all his people on this side of the water.
