Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around Marlborough. Welcome aboard the Blenheim-Waipara train service to Wharanui! Last stop Hauwai, next stop Ward.

Taimate Station was opened in April 1911, and finally closed in October 1973. Alas, I could find nothing else about this station or the surrounding area.

The house with the view of the cache is semi-condemned (restricted access), having been significantly damaged in the Seddon Earthquakes. No one lives there now.

Do not travel down the narrow road beside the rail line. The station is no longer there, and the road is so narrow and without opportunity to turn around that you will have to back out the whole way.

Taimate means slack water, from tai, sea, and mate, dead. I do not know what it refers to here. A lake?

Ballast Compaction car repairing earthquake damage, seen when placing the cache.
This machine can lift or lower rails, or even shift them sideways!
