Geocache Description:

One of a series of simple, easy to find, caches at railway stations in and around Marlborough. Welcome aboard the Blenheim-Waipara train service to Wharanui! Last stop Ward, next stop Wharanui.

Use the waypoint to find the access to this side road, then take the lower road. The upper road is a private driveway.

Mirza Station was opened in October 1915, to service the farming community there. Mirza is a common Muslim name, however Mirza Creek and the Mirza downs were actually named after a racehorse that Charles Clifford purchased from Australia. She was to be raced in January 1948 but broke out and was found a week later in the creek that now bears her name.

The railway station was 200m down the rail line to the south however I could not place the cache there as it is private land. I could have put the cache on the access road to the station, but that is not much closer and seemed of little benefit given that you have to cross the railway, which has no warning lights or bells. The shelter shed is gone (if there ever was one), but the yards are still there, although I suspect they have been rebuilt over the years. The stop was closed in April 1966.
