Trekto and Buster's Mama at the Rock Bridge

SLAGA Summer Picnic 2017
July 15, 2017
11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.


Summer is coming, and with that comes the ever-popular and rarely-duplicated SLAGA Summer Picnic! This year, attendees will be meeting, chatting and eating at a new location, one that’s full of beauty, nature and near a boatload of awesome caches! Where, you might be asking? Rock Bridge Memorial State Park!

Just minutes from Columbia, Rock Bridge Memorial State Park gives visitors the chance to scramble, hike and bicycle through a scenic environment, as well as offering them a chance to peek into Missouri’s underworld. The park contains some of the most popular hiking trails in the state and also offers solitude while hiking in the nearby Gans Creek Wild Area. Visitors can also see a large cave system with its rock bridge, sinkholes, a spring and underground stream at the Devil's Icebox. You can explore Connor's Cave in the light of the opening for a taste of the underground world.

We will meet on July 15th for the picnic at 11:00 a.m. and it will run until 5:00 p.m. or until people decide to leave! Setup will begin at 10 a.m.

This event will be located at the Gilbert Shelter. This wheelchair-accessible shelter is large enough to handle quite a crowd, and has multiple grills available for people to use to prepare their favorite meats and other goodies. Surrounding the shelter there are also lone picnic tables, each with their own personal grills, so finding a place to cook should be no problem. There is plenty of parking available and restrooms very nearby. Electric and running water are also available.

Like the summer picnics of old, this event is a bring your own food type of event. Bring your favorite food, drinks, and also bring your own meat to grill. Of course, if anyone wants to bring a dish to share, that's even better. SLAGA will provide charcoal, paper plates, napkins, plastic utensils, and the normal picnic items. If you are not sure something you need will be there, you’d better bring it yourself.

Since the summer picnic is unlike the spring, fall and potluck get togethers, there will be no awards given out and no planned activities. That said, there are miles of hiking trails to explore and caches in the park. If that’s not enough, there’s hundreds of awesome caches in nearby Columbia of almost every type.
