After visiting the famous excavations of the Crusader gate, the Hippodrome and the Roman theater, wander eastwards to discover a hidden treasure amongst the banana plantations, wheatfields and foliage. When the hippodrome adjacent to the coast was no longer big enough to host all the people lusting for gladiator blood, the Romans built a second larger hippodrome inland (2nd century A.D.). Twenty-five thousand could be seated there. Its most remarkable feature? A fifteen meter high obelisk made of solid red granite and weighing a hundred ton. The stone was painstakingly brought over from Aswan, Egypt - a journey of over 1200 kilometers.
The site was already recognized as a hippodrome by European archaeologists in the nineteenth century. Only in 2001 the obelisk, which had broken into three pieces, was re-erected at exactly the spot it stood almost 2000 years ago. This magnificent rock is currently the most prominent relic of the former hippodrome. The Israel Antiquities Authority is planning further excavations when more funding becomes available. This little known gem can be visited for free.
לאחר ביקור באתר הארכאולוגי המפורסם של הגן הלאומי קיסריה, כדאי לעשות גיחה מזרחה ולגלות אוצר חבוי בין מטעי הבננות ושדות החיטה. כשההיפודרום שעל הים הפך קטן מכדי להכיל את ההמונים צמאי הדם שרצו לחזות בקרבות גלדיאטורים, נבנה היפודרום נוסף - גדול יותר - בחלק המזרחי של העיר (זה היה במאה ה-2 לספירה). ההיפודרום המזרחי יכל להכיל 25 אלף איש ואישה, ובמרכזו התנשא עמוד אבן (אובליסק) עשוי גרניט אדומה, שגובהו 15 מטר ומשקלו מאה טון. אבן הגרניט הובאה לכאן כל הדרך מאסואן שבמצרים - מרחק של יותר מ-1200 ק"מ
האתר זוהה כהיפודרום על ידי ארכאולוגים אירופאים כבר במאה ה- 19, אז גם מצאו את שלושת חלקיו של האובליסק השבור. רק ב- 2001 הוקם האובליסק מחדש, והוא ניצב כעת במלוא הדרו בדיוק במקום בו עמד לפני כאלפיים שנה. הארכאולוגים ואנשי השימור מקווים להמשיך בחפירות ושימור האתר בעתיד הקרוב, כאשר יימצא לכך מימון. הביקור בפנינה לא מוכרת זו הוא ללא תשלום
