A Fine Pair # 812 ~ Havant Multi-cache

Number 812 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.

The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.

History
Havant is a town in the south east corner of Hampshire approximately midway between Portsmouth and Chichester. Its borough comprises the town and its suburbs including the resort of Hayling Island as well as Rowland's Castle (an exurb), the smaller town of Waterlooville and Langstone Harbour.

The old centre of the town is on a classic crossroad configuration, with the four streets being named North Street, East Street, South Street and West Street, and St Faith's Church at the crossing. One axis is a known Roman road and a few artefacts along the route point to the other also being so. There are several natural springs in the area, including one a short distance south-west of the church on West Street at the end of Homewell. This used to be the home of the premier parchment making facility in Southern England (closing in 1936) which later became a glove making factory and leather processing plant. The Treaty of Versailles was written on Havant parchment. By 1768 Havant had its first postmaster trading from various offices until the present post office in East Street opened in 1936 (one of a handful in the UK with the cypher of brief King Edward VIII above the entrance).

The Fine Pair
Something of a throwback to the pre-internet and pre-email age and sited close to the heart of the town and its commercial district, the pillar box is a double-aperture 'Type C', designed for much larger volumes of letters than are likely to be posted these days. The telephone kiosk is a model K6 which first went in to production in 1936 and proved to be very popular. It continued in use until the early 1980s when the newly-privatised British Telecom announced that they "...no longer meet the needs of our customers. Few people like to use them. They are expensive and difficult to clean and maintain and cannot be used by handicapped people". Many people across the country mounted campaigns to preserve them, however. Some local authorities used legislation designed to protect buildings of architectural or historic importance to keep old telephone boxes in prominent locations and around 2,000 of them were given listed status.

Parking
Parking (both free and paying) is available in various places around Havant. I strongly recommend not to try parking (or even stopping) next to the Fine Pair itself - it is a double-yellow line zone and the traffic wardens are very zealous! In addition, on Tuesdays and Saturdays the Havant Market extends in to the area in front of the church and the situation becomes even more restricted.

At the placeholder co-ordinates, find the telephone number inside the phone box which begins 02392. Make the remaining six digits ABCDEF.
