What is a Velodrome you ask? Simply put, it is a race track for bicycles.
This cache will take you to the Wind-Del Velodrome located in Windham Centre. It is only one of three velodromes in the province of Ontario (Milton and London being the other two) and one of eight in Canada.
The 250m outdoor velodrome (still often referred to by its former name of “the Delhi Velodrome”) was constructed in 1972 by Belgian immigrants to the area. It features an asphalt surface with corners that are banked 13 degrees. It has been the training location for many of Canada's top racing cyclists, as well as host to numerous Ontario Cycling Association events, like the 2001 Ontario Provincial Track Championships. More recently it has been used as an amphitheater.
At the moment, the 40-year-old velodrome at Win-Del Park sits empty and is facing an uncertain future, as it is in a poor state of repair. Although the track base is in good condition, the asphalt surface needs to be replaced and that is estimated to cost up to 100,000.00 dollars.
Proposals have been made to upgrade the Win-Del Velodrome and use it as a training facility to compliment the more modern indoor velodrome located in Milton. But for now it sits waiting, with a possibility of being removed, if the money isn't spent to make it usable again.
