Geocache Description:

This is part of a series of 8 "Octocaches" by 8 different Staten Island COs! It's a fairly easy hide; an ammo box hidden roughly 10ft off the main trail; Remember to be mindful of muggles and please DO NOT take the stamp! Thanks and I hope you enjoy!

“A dollar?” My pal Richie elbowed me, “whad’ya think?” Georgie stared at the hand painted sign advertising for some novelty clairvoyant, overly thinking it. I could see the wheels turning ever so slowly in Georgie’s head: “it'd be fun to know if the pinstripes win the series” he chuckled.

I wasn't interested at all; I don't believe in any of that hocus pocus but I still make it a point not to fool around with anything spooky. Besides, there was so many better things to do on a Friday night walking the boardwalk but my pals insisted. I told them I didn't want to waste the scratch but they egged me on until reluctantly I succumbed, and in we went.

It was so dark, it took a few seconds for my eyesight to adjust, but when the room started to come into focus I was drawn to her eyes; they had a certain intensity, I don't remember her blinking once, or diverting her gaze. She stared right at me.

My pals were still giggling, not taking this seriously, but I felt chills. Her hands swayed over a glass ball, it started to illuminate a mix of purple and blues. Rich tapped Georgie on the shoulder, “Check that groovy lamp!” They both laughed, and still she stared at me and I couldn't look away.

“A terrible premonition!” It was so startling to hear her speak, even my pals went silent. “...from beneath you... it devours... eight limbs reaching upwards from the darkest ocean depths... beware…” Then she faded into the darkness and as if we had snapped out of a trance we realized she'd vanished from a room with only one exit, an exit directly behind us that was impossible to have used without us having noticed, but here we were now sitting in an empty room…

That night I had terrible nightmares, it was difficult to remember them when I woke up in the morning, but I recalled the fear I felt, it was still fresh in my bones.

Later that Saturday my pals talked me into taking the Ferry in to the city to catch a flick, but boarding the boat I felt an uneasiness I couldn't shake, and things got worse once the boat left the dock; a blonde haired stranger with a Brit accent walks up to me and points downwards with his hand; “from beneath you… it devours…” he said softly. It wasn't long afterward that a loud thud rang out across the boat…

Then another thud. Then a third thud. I could hear the Ferry engine picking up the pace and yet passengers were starting to notice that in spite of the extra horsepower the boat had stopped moving…

The boat started to creak, then it tilted ever so slightly; newspapers flew through the air, briefcases slid across the floor, trash bins fell over. Then it tilted the other way, then back again. I heard a few screams and at first I thought it was an overreaction, but then I saw it too…

I didn't realize what it was at the time, I was frozen in terror, but afterwards when I'd recovered enough to process the whole thing in my head I realized it was gigantic tentacles…

That was in 1963, the same day as JFK, so maybe that's why it's been largely forgotten, but in truth there's a strong possibility there were darker forces at play that helped keep that tragedy a secret…

🐙

The boat was pulled under by a monster I could barely fathom even though I'd seen it with my own two eyes and yet out of fear of being being called crazy or locked away by secret agencies that have helped keep the whole thing under wraps for over five decades now…

🐙

Quietly though I've been gathering information on that beast; to the Greeks it was the Gorgon... In Norway it was known as the Kraken... The Akkorokamui of Japan… and now on my deathbed I'm giving you the coordinates to my secret cache of relics I've collected in my travels as I gathered info on that mysterious eight limbed monster, as well as the only known depiction of the beast from a 1963 newspaper article that was mysteriously never published...
