Tetilla Peak is the most prominant peak on the Caja del Rio plateau as seen from I-25 when driving north from Albuquerque. The peak is 7,203 ft in elevation and provides some great views of the Rio Grande Valley to the southwest.
There are several ways to approach the peak and a high clearance vehicle is recommended. One option is to park near the water tank at the provided waypoint. From there it is about a one mile hike with about 600 ft of vertical. You can get closer on a few roads further north of the tank, but again, you will need high clearance and probably 4WD as the roads get very rutted and rocky.
The cache is now a screwtop metal cylinder (jumbo bison) in a juniper at the top of the peak. There is also an ammo can at the top within about 10 feet of the benchmark that is a hiker's journal, but it is NOT the cache.
In warm weather, be sure to take take plenty of water and keep a close watch for rattlesnakes.
Congratulations to ABQ34, thoehn, budabeli, and Sandpig for the FTF!
