A penny for your thoughts? How about a penny for a hide?
Coins have been ending up on the railroad tracks for as long as trains have been running.
Sometimes known as "Pennying the tracks". Simple in operation. One places a coin on the railroad tracks and lets a passing train flatten it. When a train rolls over a penny, the force is sufficient to cause plastic deformation to occur. The penny ends up flattened and stretched into an oval, with only the faintest trace of the original design left . Some early railroad flattened cents were then hand engraved with the date and location. Some people even considered the flatten coins as good luck charms.
One soon learns that you do not recover all flatten pennies, as it becomes a rather big search in the rocks or general area. Early Geocaching? A slow moving train always gave the best results over a fast moving train. It was best to place your coins on the tracks, leave and recover them after all the dangers of passing trains. It has be noted that sometimes those coins could shoot out from under the train’s wheels at incredible speeds, turning them into potentially deadly little projectiles.
No danger these days during your search, as the trains have long stopped coming to the town of Delhi and the line has been abandoned. There has been talk of lifting the lines and extending the Delhi trail system to Tillsonburg.
My penny awaits!
