Zelengrad se prvi put spominje 1102. u Istarskom razvodu. Vladari Zelengrada bili su do početka 17. stoljeća moćni zemljoposjednici, vlasnici desetak mlinova u koritu grdoselskog potoka, dvaju rudnika ugljena i jednog rudnika salitre te plodnih njiva koje sada više ne postoje.
Utvrda je u uskočkom ratu (1615. - 1618.) uništena i potom poharana kugom. Tada se premješta na današnju lokaciju. A prema legendi, krajem 17. stoljeća dogodila se nezapamćena kataklizma: kiše nisu prestajale padati i došlo je do strahovite erozije tla. Vidljivo je to u dubokome kanjonu. Tako je Zelengrad ostao bez glavnih prihoda i bio je osuđen na propast.
Zvonik grdoselske crkve izgrađen je kamenim blokovima koje su mještani na rukama prenijeli s ruševina župne crkve sv. Jakova i još dviju manjih crkava. I u mnoge kuće u Grdoselu ugrađeni su kameni elementi sa Zelengrada. U crkvi sv. Ane nalazio se Grdoselski ulomak, glagoljički natpis iz 12. stoljeća s imenom župnika Goloba iz Tinjana i feudalca Pongraca.
Ruševine Zelengrada treba pažljivo obilaziti jer staza vodi rubom kanjona.

Der Glockenturm von der Grdoselska Kirche wurde aus Steinblöcken gebaut, die die Einheimischen auf ihren Händen übertragen haben von den Ruinen der Pfarrkirche St.James und zwei weitere kleinere Kirchen. Und in vielen Häusern in Grdoselo sind eingebaut Steinelemente von Zelengrad. In der Kirche St. Anne war ein Grdoselski Fragment, Glagolitische Inschrift aus dem 12. Jahrhundert mit dem Namen des Pfarrers Golob von Tinjan und feudalen Pongrac.
Die Ruine Zelengrad muss man vorsichtig besuchen, weil die Strecke entlang dem Rand des Canyons verläuft.

The bell tower of the Grdoselska church was built of stone blocks, which the natives transferred on their hands from the ruins of the parish church of St.James and two other smaller churches. And in many houses in Grdoselo are built stone elements of Zelengrad. In the church of St. Anne was a Grdoselski fragment, Glagolitic inscription from the 12th century with the name of the priest Golob of Tinjan and feudal Pongrac.
The ruins of Zelengrad must be carefully visited because the route runs along the edge of the canyon.
