Geocache Description:

Welcome to year 12 here on Belle Isle, waking up a new spring and some new changes in this annual event.

February 4th 2006 Brummelbear hosted the very first Geocaching event in Detroit City limits. New geocaches were placed on Belle Isle by Brummelbear, Peepz and Rattrak, not knowing at the time it would come to be the first annual Belle Isle event. At a 40 degree start rain, sleet and snow made for a cold first event for the hardy 22 teams that were there that day. Lesson learned for 2007, the event would find a home the last Saturday of March.

Several years went along with the 3 teams placing caches each year finding that 40 to 50 caches fit the island and the event quite nicely. Each year several cachers made the event possible by helping in so many ways including TeamLegend4 and DarrylW4. A crew of cachers would show year after year to help load everyone’s GPS units.

A couple of years went by with Brummelbear and Rattrak hosting and placing caches for the annual event. With thousands of emails each year we came up with the Geocaching profile of Belle Isle Cachers. The Belle Isle Cachers would become the host of everything on the island on event day from caches to a Pot Luck Lunch event, and Brummelbear would host the day’s kickoff event for breakfast at Big Boys. After a couple of years, the Belle Isle Cachers would become a very big group of generous caches giving up a part of their day to help host the event on the island. The Pot Luck became an expanding event at its home at Shelter 7. Also Brummelbear and Rattrak took on some well needed help placing cache with the addition of Team Rumble.

2017 finds a change of Belle Isle caching history again. The Belle Isle Cachers, Brummelbear, Rattrak and Team Rumble have looked deeply at what might increase the Belle Isle experience? Brummelbear suggested he drop his breakfast event to allow an earlier start to this big day of caching on the island and to have the Belle Isle Cachers host the day’s event. With all of the improvements on the island with the State of Michigan running the island we have found that Shelter 7 and the parking around it was no longer best for our event or the guests at the Aquarium and Conservatory. Working with the state we will once again be the exclusive cache placers on Belle Isle and we will have a great new home for our annual event with rest rooms on site!
