Geocache Description:

This is a puzzle cache with two field puzzles and a final stage. As with most puzzle caches the final stage is NOT at the posted coordinates.

IR

Infrared (IR) radiation is electromagnetic radiation whose wavelength is longer than that of visible light (400-700 nm), but shorter than that of terahertz radiation (3-300 µm) and microwaves (~30,000 um). Infrared radiation spans roughly three orders of magnitude (750 nm and 1000 µm). Infrared light can be split into three categories: Near-infrared (near-IR) - Closest to visible light, near-IR has wavelengths that range from 700 to 1300 nm. Mid-infrared (mid-IR) - Mid-IR has wavelengths ranging from 1300 to 3000 nm. Both near-IR and mid-IR are used by a variety of electronic devices, including remote controls. Thermal-infrared (thermal-IR or Far-IR) - Occupying the largest part of the infrared spectrum, thermal-IR has wavelengths ranging from 3000 nm to over 30000 nm.

One type of Light Emitting Diode (LED) is designed to emit infrared radiation for signaling and remote control. Ihe IR is not visible to human eyes. Several types of detectors are available to pick up IR radiation. This concept is used in television remote controls. This puzzle cache will make use of such a system employing an IR LED, As it turns out, most cell phone cameras can see IR light.

Finding the first stage
Locate the sign found at the posted coordinates.
The coordinates of the first stage are: N 42 05.ABC W 083 26.DEF
P = Total number of letters in the sign
Q = Number of letters in the third word

A = P - 8
B = Q + 1
C = 2Q - 2

D = (2P - 4Q) + 4
E = P + Q - 16
F = (P + Q)/8

Finding the final stage
Place the camera lens of a cell phone over the black plastic light shield and push the start button.The yellow LED will indicate that the system is working.
In the camera viewfinder you will observe two sets of three series of pulses. The first three sets of flashes represent the last three digits of the final stage Latitude and the last three sets of flashes is for the longitude.

The CHIRP Option
A Garmin CHIRP wireless beacon is located in the area of the first stage. If your GPS device has the ability to receive Chirp data you may enable that function and obtain instructions to find the final stage.
