The Sjolander Historical Marker was created to honor John Peter Sjolander (1851-1939), a Swedish-American known as the "Sage of Cedar Bayou." Sjolander (pronounced Sholander) was a farmer and poet that chose to make Baytown not only his home, but his inspiration. Initially, Sjolander was a jack of all trades as he dabbled in ship building, traveling, and newspaper editing. Despite working in multiple trades, he found himself back in Baytown, prefering the rustic life of a farmer above the others. His poems were influenced by the rustic lifestyle of farming and he eventually found himself published in Peterson's Magazine, the New York Weekly, and the New Orleans Times-Democrat. Some poems went into school readers, and others were found in Texas publications. One such collection of poems was published in 1928 called Salt of the Earth and Sea.
