It's not everyday that you happen upon an area so rich in history that three historical markers are required! One marker discusses the history of the Bayland Guards who were a defense organization that protected the local area in 1861. They eventually merged into the Confederate army where they fought at battles like Shiloh and Corinth. What was left of the regiment came to Houston in 1863 to deter Union advancements along the coast. Later on, these brave men became leaders in the local community. The second marker represents the Bayland Orphanage. After the war, many children were found without a parent or both parents. To care for these children, Dr. Ashbel Smith established the Bayland orphanage where he served as one of the physicians. This orphanage went on to become the first incorporated non denominational orphanage in Texas (Historical Marker). The third marker is in place to recognize the Chubb brothers ship building company. During the Civil War, these brothers built and repaired ships for the Confederate army. The brothers later went on to build ships for the federal government, but eventually the shipyard became part of the Goose Creek Oil Fields.
