This location is home to Baytown's only synagogue, K’Nesseth Israel. This congregation was organized in the 1920's with the rise of the oilfield. In 1930, the building you see today was built by Leonard Gabert, Houston architect. Unbeknownst to some, the city of Baytown tributes an important portion of it's history to the Jewish settlers from the 1920's. Many Jewish families moved to Baytown and opened store-fronts such as Rosenweig's, Sumner Dry Goods, and Wilkenfeld Furniture. The Wilkenfeld Furniture store was the oldest continuously operated retail business in Baytown until it was closed in 2006. Not only is this synagogue an important part of Baytown's history, but it's also located near the old Goose Creek Depot, which began in 1926!
There is a Texas State Historical Marker to the left of the entrance. Two 4-digit years are listed on the marker, the year the K'Nesseth Israel congregation was formed (ABCD) and the year the synagogue was completed (EFGH). The cache can be found at:
