AMERICAN PIE lyrics were written by Don McLean in 1972. This was thirteen years after the plane crash on Feb. 3, 1959, that killed Buddy Holly at age 22 and others on a Winter Dance Party tour. McLean's song was about this tragedy and quickly became No. 1. The Washington Post had this headline on April 8, 2015. Gloomy Don McLean reveals meaning of "American Pie" - and sells lyrics for $1.2 million. At age 69 he sold his 16 page original working manuscript at Chrisitie's Auction. His eight and one-half minute song was about, "the day the music died." *************************************************************************************
