Neptune's Cathedral Traditional Geocache

An impressive sea cave in the cliffs between Winney Bay and Avoca.

This cache can be reached by walking north along the rock shelves at sea level from Winney Bay. The easiest access is from the park in Del Monte Place where a newly reconstructed concrete path and steps lead down to the bottom. Alternatively, you could start from the water tower on Cape Three Points Road and walk down the service road, but this is a longer climb down (and back up again).

It's best to attempt this at low tide. A high tide or big seas could make it treacherous in places. Be aware that wet rock can be very slippery so if possible go up and around any pools of water. No heroic climbing or leaps of faith are required to reach GZ from the south. The cache could also be approached around the headland from Avoca, but to enter the cave from that side there's a climb up across a precipitous drop, so it's not for the faint-hearted.

In December 2017 the cache's original container was buried under a rockfall and has been replaced in a new location just outside the cave.

GPS reception at GZ is poor so take the coordinates with a grain of salt. Walk towards the cave on the far left of the opening, to a point directly below the cliff-face where there's a climb up onto a higher ledge running back along the wall. At the end of that ledge is a large pile of rubble now burying the original cache but don't go up there. Instead, just before the climb up, look for an angled flat rock with an orange band along the top and down the right hand side.

The container is a 380ml Sistema covered by rock to both conceal it from muggles and prevent it from washing away in extreme conditions. Please make sure to put it back snugly and securely, with it standing vertically against the back rock and then covered.
