This cache is in a grove of cork oak trees on the north-west corner of Curtin. There are three such plantations on the western edge of Canberra.
The ACT Department of Municipal Services notes that, unlike gum trees, "Cork oak is essentially fire resistant and the foliage results in a relatively non-flammable, low-level ground fuel".
While I did not live in the area at the time of the 2003 Canberra firestorm, I understand that these trees in Curtin not only slowed the fire but they checked its advance and protected the homes behind, not one of which was damaged. Further up the hill, where there were eucalypts, several houses were burnt.
This cache is at the southern end of the grove. No need to climb any trees to get this cache...
Small cache so there is very limited space for trades. Also, think carefully about any very small trinkets, you will realise why when you see the cache….
