Geocache Description:

A quick cache on a nice square, with some interesting buildings around it. Also a cache to commemorate one of Angola's women heroes... I urge other geocachers to place more caches at the other places where these heroes are honored... Would be nice to have a series here called "Heroes of Angola"...

Heroes of Angola

In the struggle against Portuguese colonialism, a guerilla group, the Kamy Squadron, was formed in 1966 and trained by Cuban internationalists. Their risky mission consisted of taking reinforcements from the Congolese border to the First Political-Military Region. In the interior of Angola, in a long and painful march, in a zone of burned earth, the Squadron was lost, and the hunger decimated a great part of the fighters.

A few women, five in total, are remembered for their actions and honored still today with statues and naming streets and squares after them. They were: Deolinda Rodrigues de Almeida, Irene Cohen, Engrácia dos Santos, Lucrécia Paim and Teresa Afonso. These women were the founders of the women's division of the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the Organização da Mulher de Angola (Organization of Angolan Women; OMA). These brave women survived the inclement weather and harsh terrain. They were arrested near the small town of Kamuna by the FNLA and later (after having been tortured) assassinated. The day of their arrest - March 2, 1966 - was consecrated as Angolan Women's Day

A beautiful commemoration monument, the Angolan Women's Memorial, can be found elsewhere in the city, at coordinates S08°49.965', E013°14.389'... Or just do my cache "The 2 monuments"...

Angolan Women Heroes

Irene Cohen (Square)

Irene Cohen Square

One of these "Angolan Heroes Women" was Irene Cohen, 2nd from the left on the picture above. A nice little square can be found in Luanda, named after her: Largo Irene Cohen. Locals like to gather here in the park to relax. Sometimes homeless people are sleeping here on the grass, under the trees.

Several interesting buildings can be seen around the square. When you are at the cache position, facing the sign, behind you is the Igreja do Carmo, a nice little church. Further downhill (north) the pink building of the Governo da Província de Luanda. On the east side of the park, opposite the church, an architectual 'interesting' building, consisting of two towers that are 'bridged' on top. They are the "Torres do Carmo", owned by BP (British Petrol) and opened in 2014...

The cache is a yellow "egg" from the "Kinder Überraschung" chocolate eggs (Kinder Surprise)... GOOD LUCK!!! (BYOP!)

It can be a very busy park, with lots of pedestrian muggles!
Look around and pick the right time to go for the grab! Use STEALTH!!

PLEASE WRITE LOGS IN ENGLISH ONLY!!! (I do not understand Portuguese...) THANK YOU!
