A povoação do bairro da Água Verde, como a da maioria dos bairros de Curitiba, começou a se intensificar a partir do século XIX. Junto aos da terra, em meados do 1800, vieram os imigrantes italianos que, já em 1888, tinham edificado a primeira igreja do bairro.
A Água Verde cresceu principalmente depois da década de 1940: as antigas chácaras foram loteadas, ruas abertas e, hoje, é um bairro densamente povoado e cortado por vias estruturais que servem ao transporte coletivo de Curitiba.
As algas que formavam massas verdes e davam uma coloração esverdeada à água doce, levaram os antigos moradores da região a batizar o rio que cortava suas fazendas e chácaras com o nome de Água Verde.
A origem do nome vem do ribeirão Água Verde, que nasce e corta a região, desaguando no Rio Belem. Este ribeirão hoje está totalmente canalizado.
O Bairro Água Verde juntamente com os bairros do Batel, Bigorrilho, Portão e Jardim Social, formam os cinco bairros mais nobres de Curitiba.
