L'église Saint-Médard était primitivement une simple chapelle fondée en 1140, qui se situait dans le petit bourg de Saint-Mard au bord de la Bièvre, sur la voie romaine qui menait de Lutèce à Lyon.
L'église actuelle à été édifiée en partie fin 15e siècle (façade et nef) et ne fut achevée que plus tard, après les guerres de religion entre protestants et catholiques. Les travaux du chœur, des absides et chapelles ne reprirent qu'au 17e siècle et la chapelle de la vierge fut ajoutée en 1784 par l'architecte Louis-François Petit-Radel.
Ces différentes époques sont visibles à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de l'église avec notamment la grande fenêtre de style gothique flamboyant du 16e siècle sur la façade occidentale et le portail du 18e. Le square occupe l'emplacement de l'ancien cimetière depuis 1875.
Sous la révolution, l'église fut un court moment un lieu de culte civil appelé "Temple du Travail", puis retourna en 1801 à un usage plus traditionnel.
A l'intérieur, le chœur élargi du 16e siècle est assez original. Il est recouvert d'une voûte en bois, unique à Paris. On y trouve aussi plusieurs peintures de différentes périodes dont un retable sur bois de Sainte Catherine du 16e siècle et un autre du peintre espagnol Fransisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664).

The current church was partly built in the 15th century (front and nef) and was completed later, after the religion wars between Catholics and Protestants. The choir, apse and chapels works was resumed in the 17th century, and last, the chapel of the Virgin was added in 1784 by architect Louis-François Petit-Radel. These different periods are visible inside and outside the church including the large window of Gothic style from the 16th century on the occidental side and the portal of the 18th. The public garden occupies the site of the old cemetery since 1875.
During the Revolution, the church was a time a place for civil cult called "Temple of Labour", and then returned in 1801 to a more traditional use.
Inside, the choir expanded in the 16th century is quite original. It is covered with a unique wooden vault in Paris. There are also several paintings from different periods including a wood altarpiece of Saint Catherine from the 16th century and another of the Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbaran (1598-1664). The large organ gallery is remarkable for its buffet carved in the 17th, and increased during 18th. The original instrument from 1650 was rebuilt in 1880 by the brothers Stoltz. It is a historical monument.
