In January 2005, 25-year-old Shelly Warner Bridgewater died due to complications related to preeclampsia – exactly one week after giving birth to her first child, Hailey. Shelly was an elementary school teacher, tennis coach, and by all accounts, the life of the party.
Preeclampsia is a high blood pressure disorder in pregnancy that affects 1 in 10 expecting mothers in the United States. That means, out of the 4 million births every year up to 400,000 pregnancies are affected by the disease.
