Geocache Description:

Ruth Patrick Science Education Center Observatory
Solar System Series - The Sun

The difficulty and terrain ratings are based on the effort required to visit the 13 other caches in the series and keep all of the codes provided for each cache. This cache on its own is probably more like a 2.5/2.

The Sun is the closest star to our planet, Earth, and is known as Sol. The Ruth Patrick Science Education Center Observatory was used to represent the location and the size of the Sun. The 5-meter dome was used as the basis for scale of the Solar System model formed by this geocache series. The Sun geocache itself is an ammo can hidden within site of the observatory, but not at the posted coordinates. In order to solve the puzzle, you must visit each of the 13 planet caches (terrestial, gas giant and dwarf) in this series and use the special code contained in each cache. They key to the code is found in the picture of planets shown below.

Sun Facts:

  • The Sun is classified as a yellow dwarf star.
  • The Sun makes up 99.86% of the mass in the Solar System.
  • More than one million Earths could fit inside of the Sun.
  • Sunspots are areas on the Sun's surface that are cooler than the surrounding area. Magnetic effects in the Sun influence sunspots.
  • It takes eight minutes for light from the Sun to arrive at Earth.
  • The Sun rotates more quickly at its equator than it does near its poles.

Note: The Solar system honor roll includes RPSEC Sun and the 13 planets, including dwarf planets, hidden before 10/17/16. Solar system caches published on or after 1/1/19 are not necessary for the honor roll nor are the codes contained there needed to find RPSEC Sun.
