Plus grande commune du canton de St-Julien avec près de 2616 hectares et 12 hameaux, VIRY a un riche passé historique lié à la très ancienne famille « De Viry » dont un des membres demeure au Panthéon.
Viry a fait partie du Comté du Genevois annexé à la Savoie en 1401.
C’est en 1815 qu’elle a été séparée des villages suisses voisins de Soral et Sézegnin par le tracé du tout nouveau canton de Genève
Elle sera finalement rattachée à la France en 1860 lors de l’annexion de la Savoie par Napoléon III.

Entre Viry et Soral (canton de Genève), se trouvait le château de la Perrière construit par un des fils de Hugues de Sallenôve, seigneur des domaines de Viry entre 1329 et 1339. Guillaume, reprit le patronyme "de Viry", la famille originaire du nom n'ayant pas eu de descendance, ainsi que les titres y afférents : comte de Viry, baron de la Perrière, baron de Cohendier seigneur d’Ogny, d’Archamps, de Sauterans. En 1536 les troupes protestantes bernoises bruleront le château de la Perrière lors de l'invasion de la Savoie.
Rebâtit, il sera à nouveau incendié par deux fois puis abandonné au profit du château de Poutex au XVIe.
La famille de Viry à s'établira alors au château de Poutex, le comte de Viry y faisant effectuer de nombreux aménagements en 1775, le transformant en résidence principale. (GC5SHND)
"Ceux du Dauphiné eurent grand dépit des forteresses que le comte Aîné avait fait élever sur leurs frontières ; aussi allèrent-ils demander au dauphin licence de prendre en Savoie le château de la Perrière, où ils pensaient que la garnison faisait petite garde, et ne se doutait de rien. Enfin le Dauphin fut tué, le 26 août 1535, d'un trait d'arbalète, comme il assiégeait le château de la Perrière"
