Cette carrière a été exploitée pour son granite et son quartz automorphe ("diamant d'Alençon") qui se forme s'il y a anfractuosité dans la roche.
Le granite est une roche plutonique (formée par cristallisation lente d'un magma à une certaine profondeur) qui a atteint le haut de l'écorce terrestre avant la surface. Il n'est donc visible qu'après érosion.
Il date sur ce site, du plissement hercynien qui s'est formé il y a environ 350 millions d'années, lorsque Laurasie et Gondwana se sont percutés.
On y trouve aussi du kaolin, du feldspath de granite qui s'est hydraté, base de la fabrication de la porcelaine (granite légèrement rosé) et du mica blanc (paillettes brillantes).

This quarry was exploited for its granite and its automorphic quartz which forms if there is anfractuosity in the rock. The granite is a plutonic rock (formed by slow crystallization of a magma at a certain depth) which reached the top of the earth's crust before the surface. It is therefore only visible after erosion. It dates on this site, from the Hercynian folding that formed about 350 million years ago, when Laurasie and Gondwana collided. There is also kaolin, hydrous granite feldspar, the basis for the manufacture of porcelain (lightly pink granite) and white mica (glitter).
