Geocache Description:

This is a cache placed by the 3GS Mensproject to raise awareness of local history highlighting important locations roughly along the route of the Glamorganshire Canal diverting slightly along the way.  This route now travels roughly where the Taff Trail runs.  All locations on the Taff Trail are within a metre or two of the tarmac path making them inclusive for all abilities.

Pontygwaith translates as 'bridge of the works'.  There was a furnace built on this site during the 14th Century.  During the English Civil War the ironworks was reputedly destroyed by a group of roundheads serving under Oliver Cromwell.  The ironworks were owned by Royalist sympathisers, and were making cannon balls and musket balls for the Royalist Army.

Be careful to replace cache exactly as you found it.
