Geocache Description:

Gone and Forgotten: The Old Girvin Cemetery

I'm continuing to discover interesting spots here in the Ghost Town of Girvin Texas. This is the Old Girvin Cemetery dating back to the early 1900's. Sadly there are only about 6 named graves here and about 2 dozen unknown sites. One of the interesting headstones is a double sided headstone for J. W. Steele and J. P. Ryan who both died on Feb 9, 1927. I Googled the names but came up empty. I heard a story from one of the locals about 2 boys who were passing through town and killed in a car accident near one of the Pecos River bridges. They were buried as unknowns before the families came looking for them several months later. The families followed the route towards their intended destination asking people if they remembered seeing them. The people of Girvin told them the story of the accident and they matched the description. Could these be the two boys? I don't know. I haven't been able to confirm the names or date. If you have any information to add, please forward it to me.

Use the parking coords and follow the old dirt road until you see the cemetery gate entrance on your right. The cache is located on the south side towards the R/R tracks near a rock placement I spotted. Look for the old bones on loan from one of the residents. Hey, they're not using them anymore. As always, this IS West Texas. Beware of critters that bite and plants that poke.
