This cache is located on a pathway that follows the line of the old Hayling Island Branch Line Railway.
The 'Puffing Billy' train ran between Havant and West Town between 1865 and 1963, mainly for the use of holidaymakers and daytrippers in summer months. It was run by the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway Company until 1923, the Southern Railway from 1923 until 1948, and then British Rail following the nationalisation of the railways. The line was closed in 1963 when it was decided that necessary repairs to the bridge between Langstone and Hayling Island were prohibitively expensive. The last train ran from West Town to Havant on 3rd November 1963.
Today this pathway is part of Route 2 of the National Cycle Network and is popular with cyclists and dog-walkers. Not much remains of the railway today, but benches along the route are made from old sleepers.
Important: when replacing the cache please make sure it is securely in place and will not fall out!
