INTRODUCTION TO THE CACHE
This cache is for real adventurers! It will take you into the depths of Planet Earth and this explains why such a so high quotation has been attributed to it. The gps coordinates will lead you to the fence surrounding the entrance to one of the many pits of the Mine of Montioni. Entering and visiting the mine is not prohibited but a high degree of attention is required. This mine hides no real dangers excepted the risk of slipping ( not falling!! ). The use of a good torch is necessary. The is a well known place among local speleologists and it could be quite crowded sometimes: this is why you are asked to put the box back the same way you found it. Coveri it up with small stones ( avoid heavy ones which could damage the box ) in order to conceal it from the sight of muggles.
HISTORY
The very first information about the alunite Mine of Montioni goes back to the 15th century when the Pope wanted it to be closed because of direct concurrence with the pontifical Alunite Mine of Tolfa ( discovered in 1461 ) located in the surroundings of Rome.
Records indicate that some exploitation of the site was conducted also under the reign of Cosimo I de' Medici in 1550.
In 1743, during the reign of Francesco III of Lorena, the first duke of Tuscany, the exploitation of the mine was undertaken again. In 1770-71 Pietro Leopoldo (Grand Duke of Tuscany ) paid a visit to the mines of Montioni where just 26 workers were operating at that period.
In 1788 the alunite mining economy collapsed because of the discovery of the process to synthesize industrial alunite.
Only during the Napoleonic period, the Mines of Montioni experienced a real rebirth. Under the reign of the princess Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, the sister of the Great Emperor, a new village was built in Montioni and the mines and their exploitation were modernized.
During the entire XIX century the mines reached their highest exploitation rate and the production of alunite went from 385.420 pounds (in 1858-59 ) to 420.687 pound (in 1860-61).
The very last year of activity of the mine is in 1938 when the SIMEC company which superviserd the site since 1930, declared its bankruptcy.
Alunite KAl3[(OH)6|(SO4)2]
Alunite was known since ancient times for its fireproof properties. In more recent years, it was used to prevent gunpowder from burning when transported.
Alunite was also used in medicine for its astringent properties and to colour fabrics.
During the Middle Ages it was highly demanded for tunning leather and give colour to wool and silk.
Nowadays alunite is used both in shaving creams to stop bleeding and as a deodorant and disinfectant.
