Millhaven Institution is a Maximum Security prison located in Bath, Ontario, along the shores of Lake Ontario. Approximately 500 inmates are incarcerated at Millhaven.
Opened in 1971, Millhaven was originally built to replace Ontario's other aging maximum security prison, Kingston Penitentiary in Kingston Ontario. A riot at Kingston Penitentiary forced Millhaven to open prematurely.
On July 10, 1972 14 inmates escaped a recreation yard by clipping the chain link fence. A subsequent manhunt was undertaken by police and Canadian Forces personnel. 300 police officers and soldiers from CFB Trenton created a cordon that eventually yielded the capture of most of the escapees. The event was immortalized in song by the rock band The Tragically Hip in "38 Years Old" from the "Up to Here" album. The lyrics in fact have the date and number of escapees wrong ("12 men broke loose in '73), this was done for rhyming purposes to match the next line (..."from Millhaven maximum security.)
You will not be able to see the facility from GZ, but instead will be treated to the vista of Lake Ontario waters, hopefully on a quiet day. Take time to enjoy the view, and replace the cache as found.
