Geocache Description:

This is a extra small clear container hidden a foot from the pavement. It's dedicated to my sister's dachshund Ed!

This letterbox is dedicated to my sister's dog Ed who crossed the rainbow bridge last night. Today would have been his 13th birthday so I felt he deserved a letterbox like my other two dog related geocaches Willie J. Bear (Willie and Ed grew up together in the same household for a few years and later on as neighbors living across the driveway from each other! They were pretty much brothers!) and Clover W. Bear (Ed is Clover's "uncle" since he was Willie's 'brother,' they were neighbors for awhile too and Ed even moved in with us for a few months! He's the only dog Clover has ever shared a home with!).

When Ed was 4 he suffered a terrible back injury (it's very common amongst dachshunds due to their long bodies...) and the first vet we went to suggested it wasn't worth it to save him because even after surgery he wouldn't live a life worth living... So, we completely ignored that vet and visited a second vet; Ed had back surgery and he came away from it having lost the use of his back legs... But amazingly this didn't slow him down in the least! My father built him a back harness with wheels and he'd zip around the house as if nothing had changed! Miraculously after a year he slowly regained the ability to move his back legs. It was just uncanny how wrong the first vet had been...

Ed grew up with the first two dachshunds my family had (Tootsie and Willie!) and he served as "Old Man Ed" to the second generation of dachshunds (Hansel, Harley, Daisy & Clover! My family kinda loves dachshunds, ha). He loved pancakes (pretty much any food actually, except popcorn), he had two different color eyes (one was a dark brown, the other was blue) and his favorite hobby was licking the dishes from the open dishwasher! He was a great pup and my family misses him already...

For the letterbox this is a really simple hide; it's at the base of a tree about a foot from the pavement. It's not a scenic spot but it's across the street was his favorite park! If you have the chance I'd suggest making the short trip across the street and enjoying the water just like Ed used to love, enjoy!
