NYPL: The Berlin Wall in NYC Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

New Market Mallers: I am sad to say that I will need to archive this cache. Unfortunately, the pieces of the Berlin Wall have been moved and I do not know when or where they will show up again. 112 FP's in just over 18 months is a really nice run, but the main purpose of the cache was to bring people to the wall and it is not there anymore. Happily a new cache will be coming to this location in the near future, so hopefully some people will get to visit this branch again soon. Thanks to all who visited!

Geocache Description:

Tear down that wall!  And bring some of it to Manhattan.

Over the years, I have gotten to see things that I would not have known about, if it wasn't for geocaching.  On more than one occasion, I have been pleased to find a geocache that was placed near something interesting or cool.  I hope this winds up being the same type of situation for some of you.

***NEW as of March 2017! Now geocachers who find at least 6 of the 12 NYPL caches are eligible for a pathtag! If you think you qualify, please send me a note and I will get your tag out to you.

Update: May 2017 - I have been notified by the New York City Geocaching Community that the NYPL Series of caches has won the award for Best Series in NYC in 2016!! Additionally, this cache also won Best Location/View and was nominated for Best in Manhattan and Cache of the Year! Thank you to everyone who has visited to this point as your logs are a big reason why this has happened!

If you want to test out the email address that you will be using to help you find this cache, email the letters "NYPL" to NYPLGEO@gmail.com and you should get a response confirming you are using the correct email address. However, when performing the cache, you will need to send a new email to this email address. Do not reply to any "canned responses" you have received. ***It has come to my attention that some email addresses might not receive the responses, specifically AOL. If you run into this problem, please try a different email address (if you have one) or send a message to the CO and I will do my best to respond ASAP.

The fall of the Berlin Wall began on November 9, 1989.  This was the beginning of the German reunification that formally concluded 339 days later on October 3, 1990.  October 3rd each year is now German Unity Day.

The parts of the wall that were not ground up when the wall came down have been given to various institutions around the world.  There are at least four segments of the wall on display in New York City.  This particular segment used to be on display down the block in Paley Park, which is still worth checking out if you are nearby.  It now resides in the lobby of 520 Madison Avenue, the entrance of which is on E. 53rd Street..

To find this cache:

Stage 1 - Go to the posted coordinates and enter the lobby to visit the pieces of the Berlin Wall. While you are facing the front of the wall, look to your right. You should see a column with the word "MAIL" on it. Below the word "MAIL" there are two more words. Email those TWO WORDS to NYPLGEO@gmail.com and you will get your instructions on what to do next. If you do not get an email response within 2 minutes, send a message to the CO and I will do my best to get back to you right away.

Did you know that every branch of the New York Public Library offers free Wi-Fi? If you cannot send an email from Stage 1, walk to the posted waypoint coordinates so you can use the free Wi-Fi inside and send your email answer.

Stage 2: Read your email. Find the geocache!

Please note that the final is only available during the following hours:

Wednesday - 11am to 7pm

Thursday - 11am to 6pm
