A Capela

Its building began in the fifteenth century with the cenobium\'s construction (a type of convent, monastery) which primary objective was to house the Order of St. Francis and respective confraternity in Madeira Island, being appointed the year of 1432 for their installation.
Around 1459, due to disharmony with the Order of Christ, the Franciscans withdrew from the island, having later installed in Xabregas, Lisbon, returning in 1476 under the jurisdiction of friar Rodrigo de Arruda, with Pope Sixtus IV\'s endorsement for the new installation on the former residence of São João.
