All Souls Church is one of 4 that came within the benefice of Cheriton.
It was built in response to the population growth of the late 19th century. The old parish was split along the railway embankment with Cheriton Street being part of the north line.
Mrs Thompson, a farmers widow, died in 1887 leaving a plot of land on the high street and a bequest of £10,000 that a church be built.
There was however a legal hitch, as Mrs Thompson had died before signing the land deed, meaning it took 2 years to go through the legal process of Court of Chancery before the trustees could hand over the land for the church to be built.
All Souls was designed by Ewan Christian, a notable architect and was consecrated on 3rd January 1895.
