Kvarntorpshögen är en cirka 100 meter hög slagghög i Kvarntorp nära Kumla, och med sina 157 meter över havet är den Närkeslättens högsta punkt. Högen är förknippad med konstprojektet Konst på Hög. Under vintertid finns även en aktiv slalombacke här. Det finns en bilväg upp, och sommartid finns även en kiosk med lättare servering och information. Det finns en trätrappa med 427 trappsteg som leder upp mot toppen, och den har blivit mycket populär till konditionsträning. Sommaren 2012 myntades begreppet "besegra trappan "(www.besegrattrappan.se), vilket går ut på att klara tio varv, upp för trappan, runda toppen och springa körvägen ner. Det finns även flera vandringsleder i området.
Högen är resultat av rester från oljeskifferindustrin i området efter andra världskriget. Man gjorde försök att utvinna den då dyrbara oljan ur den oljeskiffer som fanns i området. När restprodukten – skifferaskan – lades på hög hade den en temperatur på runt 600 °C. Nyligen utförda mätningar har visat temperaturer på upp till 700 °C i enstaka partier, även om den typiska temperaturen är strax under 100 °C. De varma partierna orsakas av förbränning av kolväterester och pyrit i skifferaskan. Här utvecklas rök ur marken som huvudsakligen består av vattenånga. Kvarntorpshögen is a slag heap in Kvarntorp near Kumla and is the Närke Plain’s highest point with its 157 meters above sea level. It is well-known for the art project or “A Pile of Art” (Konst på hög). The area has an active ski slope during winters, and during the summer there is a popular café open with light refreshments and tourist information. There is a road that can be driven up by car, but most popular is the wooden staircase with its 427 steps leading up to the summit, which has become very popular as a cardio workout. In fact, since 2012 there is an activity "Conquer the Stairs" (www.besegrattrappan.se), a challenge to do ten laps by running/walking up the stairs, around the top and running/walking down the road. There are also several hiking trails in the area.
The mound is the result of the residue product from the previous oil shale industry here after the Second World War. The government ordered the extraction of the precious oil from the shale found in the area. When the recovered waste product - shale ash - was piled on high here, it had a temperature of around 600 °C. Recent measurements have shown that temperatures can be up to 700 °C in certain areas, although the average temperature is just below 100 °C in the hotter areas. This is caused by the combustion of hydrocarbon residues and pyrite in shale ash and explains the smoke that develops and seeps out of the ground, consisting mainly of water vapour. Thus the name of this multi cache after the American folk song "
