Geocache Description:

This cache takes you to the northwest borders of Strathcona County on the Strathcona Riverside Nature Trail. Discover the amazing trails that run along the river valley as part of the Capital Region River Valley Park Implementation Plan.

This cache leads you to a beaver pond! Once man-made, this pond is now home to waterfowl and beavers. The Beaver (Castor Canadensis) was the first natural, river-related resource to be exploited by Europeans. The beaver had become almost extinct by 1930, but conservation measures have restores their population to relatively healthy levels. They are now commonly seen along the river even in the middle of urban areas. Beavers build strong lodges from sticks and caked mud into which even black bears have trouble breaking. Keep your eyes open for beaver runs, trails that lead from upland areas down to the river where the beaver drags downed trees.
