In the town plan of 1866 Central Park was shown as Reserve No.8 and dedicated as a park in 1874. A local monk, Brother Francis Gatti, volunteered to look after the plants in the park and was commissioned to go to Sydney to select 400 trees. Apparently there were 'larrikins' around even in those days and he was initially thwarted in his labours but perseverance and horticultural skills prevailed. By the time it was formally proclaimed in 1887 the facetiously named 'Dismal Park' was becoming a place of beauty.
Surrounding the park are the heritage buildings of the Catholic, Anglican and Presbyterian Churches, as well as Smith House, Lindsay House and Solomon's Cottage.
