Welcome to this series you will discover or rediscover the 8.8 line.
The line Bettelainville in Waldwisse was part of the strategic railway lines of proximity in Alsace Lorraine. She led Bettelainville in Merzig, and more generally of Metz in Merzig, using another existing line (Metz-Anzeling). From Bettelainville she heads north of the Moselle to cross the border at Waldwisse.
HISTORY
After the 1871 annexation, the Germans want to redirect the rail network to the Reich. The line is therefore part of this project. In addition, at the end of the nineteenth century, many villages from Waldwisse region want the construction of this line, to be less isolated. Thus in 1902 began the studies, then in 1909 the work.
The line was opened on 1 November 1917 and was attached to the Alsace and Lorraine railway. These belonged to Germany. Part of the line was in the Saarland region. The management of the entire line was held by Saarland. In 1927, three back and were carried out on the 40 km of this line, this was added trips to Mondorff.
Saarland status change
In 1936, after the return of the Saar to Germany, appeared tensions with France. Indeed a part 621 m long (of 1715 m) of Silwingen tunnel was in the Saar region. The management of the entire line was held by Saarland. In 1927, three round trips were made on the 40 km of this line, in addition there were trips to Mondorf.
The Second World War
In 1939, shortly after the beginning of the war (September 3) viaduct Saarland was destroyed and never rebuilt. Following the annexation of a part of France, traffic resumed in October 1941, between Mondorf and Bettelainville. Omnibus trains ran from Merzig to Bettelainville through Hombourg-Budange. On 17 November 1944, the line was cut off again due to blasting three concrete bridges south of Silwingen tunnel. Seven other bridges were demolished during the retreat of the Germans in November 1944. The US military cleared the remains of the line, and repaired the line north to Mondorf.
After the war
After the war, the movement of people continued between Hombourg-Budange and Waldwisse. She stopped 5 May 1948. Only freight trains arrived in Waldweistroff station to serve Kontzler companies, repairers and sellers of agricultural machinery. During the 1956-1957 years, the fields were sold, and in 1967 the last rails were removed.
Nowadays, many stations still exist, you will meet during this journey. They are almost all become private property. Only the Hombourg-Budange station is still in operation. Viaducts were destroyed. One on the Thionville-Anzeling line was disassembled to pass wholesale templates trains. Only the abutments and pier remain. The tunnels of Dalstein and Silwingen still exist in the forests.
