Geocache Description:

This cache takes you to Fort Saskatchewan. The Fort Saskatchewan District entered history well over 200 years ago with its original industry of canoe building. Go visit the trails that traces its history back to this Northwest Mounted Police fort of 1875.

Getting to the other side cache leads you to a great view of the North Saskatchewan River. A great opportunity to remember the river  was a means of transportation, but in the days before bridges, it was also a barrier. A ferry was the answer!

By 1874, Joseph and Frank Lamoureaux were taking people across the river in a small boat. As more people started to settle in the area, they needed something more reliable. In 1882, the Lamoureax brothers started the first real ferry using a cable and a flat bottomed scow.
The scow was attached to a cable through a pulley. As long as the ferryman kept the scow angled upstream, the current would push the boat sideways towards the other shore
