Geocache Description:

This cache takes you to Alberta‘s Fossil Trail! Go and discover what Alberta might have been like millions of years ago.

Fossil cache takes you to Alberta’s fossil trail! Imagine what Alberta must have been like millions of years ago. Temperatures were much warmer. Lush green vegetation covered much of the land. The rest was covered by oceans. Abundant life filled the ocean and forests. When organisms died, their remains accumulated in stagnant swamps. Over centuries, seas rose or land sank, and the swamps were covered. Observe the cliffs across the river; you can see a line that separates two very different time intervals, the Cretaceous Period and the Pleistocene Epoch. Rocks at the base of the Cliffs were deposited by rivers and lakes 74 to 68 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. Dinosaur fossils are buried deep within these rocks. Above these rocks are softer brown seems-gravel and sand dumped by glaciers between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago during Pleistocene Epoch. The fossilized remains of ice age mammals can be found in these deposits.
