Una semplice cache alla scoperta di "Roma curiosa"
I palazzi che dominano largo del Tritone, aperto in occasione della costruzione del Traforo Umberto I , progettato nel 1905 da Alessandro Viviani per collegare via del Tritone con via Nazionale passando sotto i giardini del Quirinale, furono realizzati nel primo decennio del Novecento in stile liberty dall'architetto Arturo Pazzi. Al civico 152 è situato il "Palazzo del Messaggero", costruito tra il 1910 ed il 1915 come albergo, il Select: la facciata gioca tutta la sua scenografia nell'alternarsi di balconcini, timpani alle finestre, pilastri di vario ordine, decorazioni a stucco sotto l'ampio cornicione fino all'attico soprastante, ricco di colonne, pilastri e due serliane con varie elaborazioni architettoniche. Il palazzo fu acquistato dai fratelli Perrone nel 1920, allora proprietari de "Il Messaggero", che ne fecero la sede definitiva del quotidiano. Sull'altro lato del largo del Tritone è situato il palazzo costruito tra il 1910 ed il 1913 come sede dei Magazzini Old England, per molti anni poi sede centrale della Banca d'America e d'Italia, oggi filiale della Deutsche Bank. L'edificio imponente si adatta bene allo slargo stradale, in una scenografia urbanistica di grande effetto; sviluppa quattro piani oltre quello terreno con finestre dalle grandi cornici, tra paraste con capitelli dalle testine di Mercurio al piano nobile e colonne all'ultimo, con una prora sul fastigio. Il volto di Mercurio con l'elmo alato, dio dei commerci collegati al denaro, è raffigurato tra decori in fregi sulle lesene all'altezza del terzo piano. Al pianterreno apre un bel portale ad arco e sui lati sviluppano varie porte squadrate, ora in funzione di vetrate.
Da segnalare il semaforo del largo del Tritone: fu qui posto nel 1925 e risulta il primo impianto semaforico di Roma.
The buildings dominating Largo del Tritone, built during the construction of the Umberto I tunnel, designed in 1905 by Alessandro Viviani to connect Via del Tritone with Via Nazionale passing under the Quirinale Gardens, were built in the first decade of the 20th century in art nouveau style from the architect Arturo Pazzi. At number 152 there is the "Messaggero Newspaper Building", built between 1910 and 1915 as a hotel, the Select: the façade has a series of balconies, timpani at the windows, various pilasters, stucco decorations under the wide ledge above the penthouse, full of columns, pillars and various architectural structures. The building was bought by brothers Perrone in 1920, the owners of "Il Messaggero", who made it the permanent seat of the newspaper. On the other side of the largo del Tritone there’s a building built between 1910 and 1913 as the seat of the Old England shopping centre, for many years, then headquarters of the Bank of America and Bank of Italy, today of the Deutsche Bank. The imposing building suits well the road widening, in an urban setting it creates a great effect; with its four floors on the ground floor with large frames windows, between pilasters with capitals, with the heads of Mercury on the main floor and the last columns, with a bow in the gable end. The face of Mercury, god of commerce related to money, with winged helmet is portrayed in the friezes and decorations on pilasters at the third floor. On the ground floor a beautiful arched portal opens and at the sides there are squared doors, now used as windows.
Noticeable is even the traffic light of the largo del Tritone: it was placed here in 1925 and is the first traffic light in Rome.
