Theodore Roosevelt's Sagamore Hill

Welcome to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.

This cache was  placed with permission from the National Park Service and the Superintendent to celebrate the NPS Centennial.

Sagamore Hill was the home of Theodore Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. Born in Manhattan, Theodore Roosevelt first came to Oyster Bay on summer vacations with his family in the 1870s.  The teenage boy came to love the area's natural beauty and enjoyed the opportunities here for hiking, rowing, swimming, and riding.  When TR finished college, he thought this was the best place to raise a family, and purchased farmland on Cove Neck.  Plans for the house were nearly stopped in 1884 due to the death of his young wife Alice, two days after the birth of their daughter. But his family convinced him that the child would still need a proper home, so he went ahead with the construction.

After TR married old friend Edith Kermit Carew, the couple moved into Sagamore Hill and would raise six children in the house, and experience some of the most memorable events of their lives there. Theodore Roosevelt died at Sagamore Hill on January 6, 1919 when he was 60 years old.  His wife Edith remained in the home until she passed away in 1948.

The family motto is carved on the beam over the north door of the house - Qui Plantavit Curabit, He who plants shall preserve.

The cache is a lock & lock with a small log book and some good park-related swag.

  • For the final stage, add the following dates in the format N405x.xxx  W732x.xxx
  • On the interpretive sign, find the year that TR's children had a guinea pig and add it to N40o51.241
  • On the memorial stone, look closely to find the year below "Skip" and add it to W73o27.903

Please sign the log, close the lid securely, and hide the cache back where you found it. Then go ahead and explore the 83 acres of grounds, woods, and shoreline where Theodore Roosevelt and his family hiked. For more information about Sagamore Hill NHS, visit www.nps.gov/sahi
