Quick find. Watch out for muggles.
Apache County has had two courthouses in St. Johns. The original was built on the main street of town. The present two-story courthouse was built in 1917 and renovated in 1993. It is constructed of native stone. The current building housed the old jail facilties, in use for sixty years. It consisted of a 21x14 foot iron cell block, previously part of the Yuma Territorial Prison. This historic courthouse is home to Superior Court and the St. Johns Justice Court. The growing needs of the court have resulted in the addition of two courtrooms; however, the old courtroom located on the second floor of the courthouse is one-of-a-kind. The solid oak bench and jury box are hand carved as is the State Seal that is found on the bench. The Seal is the original Arizona State Seal. The seats are reflective of the time they were built - a time when most men wore hats. Still present today are the original hat racks that were included under each seat.
