Teriberka is one of the few Arctic Ocean shore villages in the Kola Peninsula, which is not closed, i.e. anyone can freely come and go without a special permission. It should not be in the restricted border zone any more. However, we strongly recommend bringing your passport with you as it is very much possible that the police wants to check it.
Teriberka was founded in the 19th century, and its heyday was in the 1940s-1960s, when it had two fishing farms, two dairy farms, a poultry farm, a 2000-head reindeer herd, an American mink breeding farm, two fish processing facilities, and almost 5000 inhabitants.
The downfall began in the 1960s, when the district was transferred to the jurisdiction of the town of Severomorsk. In the 2010s the population has dropped way below 1000.
Teriberka is famous for having provided the setting for the 2014 Cannes winner and Oscar nominee Russian drama movie Leviathan by Andrey Zvyagintsev.
The easiest way to visit Teriberka is by your own transportation. However, there is also public transportation from Murmansk. Buses leave from Murmansk every evening at 5:40 p.m., arriving in Teriberka at 10:00 p.m. They drive back the next morning, leaving Teriberka at 7:00 a.m. and arriving in Murmansk at 11:15 a.m. So if you go by bus you'll have to stay overnight in Teriberka. This could be very nice in the summer during the "white nights", just bring your own food and check the weather forecast. Rumour has it that there is also a small hotel in Teriberka, but we haven't checked this. Please remember that camping in the winter will be horrible as the temperature might drop to -40.
