We love Lake Erie Wine Country and hope to give cachers a glimpse into the making of these great wines with our amateur knowledge.
The interconnected freshwater Great Lakes were formed at the end of the last glacial period (approximately 14,000 years ago).
Located in northeastern North America (on the Canada-United States border), they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth.
Not only were 5 lakes formed giving this area a major highway for transportation, migration and trade, but they also filled this area with ridges of rich, fertile soil and gravel.
The cool offshore breezes and plateau-like topography help contribute to this also being an ideal area for vineyards. Lake Erie Wine Country extends approximately 50 miles, stretching west to east from Harborcreek, PA to Silver Creek, NY.
Spring arrives after a winter with temperatures dipping as low -17 to -30 °F. With no foliage yet, you will see vineyard workers finish the pruning of the vines and checking the trunks for winter damage. Equipment is calibrated to begin weed and pest management.
