FR:Le château actuel date du XIIIe siècle et a été érigé par la famille de Savoie pour contrôler le passage le long du lac Léman. La forteresse servait également d’arsenal, de prison et, temporairement, de résidence des comtes de Savoie.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau situe une scène de son roman la « Nouvelle Héloïse » (1762) au Château de Chillon. Intrigué, Lord Byron le visite et y trouve l’inspiration pour écrire le « Prisonnier de Chillon » (1816) qui décrit les souffrances de François Bonivard (1493-1570), prieur emprisonné pour ses positions anti-savoyardes.
Il est possible de louer le château pour divers évènements. Depuis le château, rendez-vous à Montreux (en bateau, en bus ou à pied) où vous pourrez admirer les palmiers et les plantes exotiques qui se situent le long des quais. Continuez votre trajet en direction de Vevey, toujours en longeant le lac Léman. Vous y trouverez la statue érigée en mémoire de Charlie Chaplin, qui a vécu et est mort dans cette ville.
L’aura du Château de Chillon est intacte : il accueille un peu plus de 350'000 visiteurs par an, dont 75% de touristes étrangers.

EN: The rock island between Lake Geneva and the steep looming mountains was inhabited even in prehistoric times. For hundreds of years the passage of ships on Lake Geneva and the important land route to the St. Bernhard Pass was controlled from this island. Chillon belonged to the Counts of Savoy from the 12th to the 16th century, then the inhabitants of Bern conquered the water castle, and subsequently the inhabitants of Vaud prevailed.
It’s possible to rent the castle for various events. From the Castle, you can reach Montreux (by boat, by bus or on foot), where you can admire ten mile of sheltered bays, bordered with flower-lined promenades, exotic plants and palm trees.
More than 350,000 guests visit Chillon per year. They view the wall paintings from the 14th century, the subterranean vaults, parade halls and the bedroom (which has been preserved in its original form) dating to the time of Bernese rule. The entire complex consists of 25 buildings and three courtyards, protected by two circular walls.
