On n'en a que peu conscience mais les travaux d'aménagement routiers sont de gros consommateurs de matériaux.
A telle enseigne que la carrière de Mantry, au lieu-dit Montoulin, n'a été exploitée en 1995 et 1996 que pour fournir des matériaux pour la construction de l'autoroute A39. Elle est fermée depuis et a été réaménagée pour que la nature y reprenne ses droits.
Mais revenons d’abord un peu en arrière :
Il y a 160 millions d’années (au Bajocien), une mer, la Mésogée, occupait tout le Sud de l’Europe et envahit les zones affaissées, dont le Jura actuel. Ces zones affaissées ont piégé les sédiments, qui se déposent en couches successives, jusqu’à produire des roches calcaires.
Après émersion de la région, ces roches calcaires sont soumises à l’évolution continentale (en résumé : l’érection des Alpes) et l’érosion façonne les reliefs sous une grande variété de climats, en développant de nombreuses cavités : c’est le karst !
La carrière de Mantry offre l'opportunité à l'apprenti géologue de découvrir "in situ" l'évolution du calcaire vers le karst.
