Geocache Description:

Black Saturday, February 7th 2009 was Victoria's worst bushfire disasters in history. Across the state of Victoria, approximately 400 fires started on the 7th. The weather conditions on Black Saturday were some of the worse bushfire conditions ever recorded. Temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius with winds exceeding 100 km per hour. By the end of this significant event, 173 people died, 141 were injured and 2,100 homes were lost.

Across the road from GZ, is the location and causation of the Pomborneit-Weerite fire, which started at 13:14 hours on February 7, 2009. The local Brigades were quick to respond, however due to the ferocity of the conditions (max temperature recorded was 45.1°C, North- North Westerly wind speed of 100-113kph), the extremely fast running grass fire moved quickly, headed in a South-South Easterly direction, towards Pomborneit.
