O miejscu
Rys historyczny
W okresie dominacji pruskiej, w styczniu 1742 roku, król Fryderyk II ogłosił Wrocław twierdzą i zadecydował o przekształceniu arsenału w magazyny wojskowe. Murki i stalowe ogrodzenie odtwarzają zarys trójskrzydłowego, czterokondygnacyjnego budynku, który przetrwał do bombardowań Wrocławia w 1945 roku.
Obecnie
About the place
History
The Arsenal in Wroclaw is older than the similar objects in Cracow, Warsaw, Berlin or Vienna. It was built in 1459, near the already existing Mikolajska Gate, from which he took his other name – Arsenal Mikolajski. In it’s early years Arsenal was a granary, built for gathering the supplies for the eventual siege of town. In XVI century, people started to transport the weapons, which weren't located in basements of City Hall and municipal walls. People started naming the building “The Zeughaus”, and stored within were for example: cannons, cannonballs, polearms and firearms. Within the courtyard between granary and XIVth century walls, gradually next objects were raised, such as: coach house, smithy and gunsmith workshop. On the zeughaus area, gunpowder wasn't being stored - because he was held in a tower, built specially for this reason. Zeughaus gained his present appearance in the twenties of XVII century. As last a three-pivot building was erected bramny, which filled the space between the eastern wing and the granary. From this period also originates the stone, mannerist casing of the well in the courtyard. In the period of the Prussian dominance, in January 1742, king Frederik the Second announced Wroclaw a strondhold, and he decided about converting the arsenal into military warehouses. Low walls and steel enclosing are reconstructing the outline of three-wing, four-storey building, which survived till airstrikes in Wroclaw in 1945.
Present
The Arsenal is a branch of the Urbam Museum of Wroclaw. In the northern and western wings, there’s a Military Museum, and in the old granary from year 2001, the Archeological Museum and the Archives of Architecture Museum have their registered office here. In the four-sided tower, there’s office of Kurkowe’s Brotherhood of Wroclaw. The Arsenal is also a place known for organising many cultural events, such as: Annual festival of the chamber music – “Evenings in Arsenal”.
